Applicants for Academic Excellence Scholarships at John Paul College are required to sit the
ACER Scholarship Examination.
The
ACER Scholarship Examination is for current and future students who are applying for a
2026 scholarship and will be held in February 2025 at the John Paul College campus.
ACER Scholarship Examination registrations
close on 2 February 2025.
Scholarship applicants should select the appropriate ACER Scholarship Examination Level when completing the ACER Scholarship online application.
Level 1: Designed for students who sit the test for entry into Years 7 and 8
Level 2: Designed for students who sit the test for entry into Years 9 and 10
Examination Fees: Basic Registration $125
In addition to the above requirements, eligibility for an Academic Excellence Scholarship will be conditional on the following outcomes:
- students must be commencing/studying in Years 7 to 10;
- have performed at a high level on the ACER scholarship exam;
- have demonstrated above-average achievement in academics providing NAPLAN tests and their last two years of school reports;
- demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the curricular and co-curricular activities of the College, that is, participate in at least two of the following: one sport, one service and one cultural activity each year (reviewed annually); and
- possess qualities compatible with the values and ethos of the College.
As a general rule, students will need to achieve a certain percentile level to receive a 50% remission (over 95th percentile) or for 25% remission (over 90th percentile).
Applicants are also required to provide a resume of achievements to accompany their application.
Excellence Scholarships are available in the categories of Academics, Performing Arts and Sporting Excellence.
Excellence Academics Scholarships are offered on the basis of:
- students must be commencing/studying in Years 7 to 10;
- have performed at a high level on the ACER scholarship exam;
- have demonstrated above-average achievement in academics providing NAPLAN tests and their last two years of school reports;
- demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the curricular and co-curricular activities of the College, that is, participate in at least two of the following: one sport, one service and one cultural activity each year (reviewed annually); and
- possess qualities compatible with the values and ethos of the College.
Excellence Performing Arts Scholarships are offered on the basis of:
- students must be commencing/studying in Years 7 to 10;
- students who have demonstrated strong academic achievements providing NAPLAN tests and their last two years of school reports;
- students who will contribute fully to the holistic nature of the College through strong participation in our Performing Arts Programs;
- students who possess qualities compatible with the values and ethos of the College; and
- students must meet the minimum recommended requirements before being asked to audition.
Students excelling in the following arts are highly encouraged to apply:
- male vocalists
- orchestral percussionists
- french horn
- double reed (oboe and bassoon)
- lower strings (cello and double bass)
The Principal reserves the right to privilege certain instruments/or performance types dependent on the needs of the College at the time of application.
Applicants are also required to provide a portfolio of achievements to accompany their application. Eligible candidates will then be invited to the second stage of the application, which will involve an audition piece to be prepared.
Excellence Sport Scholarships are offered to:
- students commencing/studying in Years 7 to 10;
- students who have demonstrated strong academic achievements providing NAPLAN tests and their last two years of school reports;
- students who have been competing to at least state or national level in their chosen sport/s;
- students who will contribute fully to the holistic nature of the College through strong participation in our Sporting Programs; and
- students who possess qualities compatible with the values and ethos of the College.
Students excelling in the following sports are highly encouraged to apply:
- basketball
- cricket
- football
- netball
- rugby
The Principal reserves the right to privilege certain sports over others based on the needs of the College at the time of application.
Applications for the Karen Spiller Leadership Scholarship at JPC are open to new families, with children in Year 6 demonstrating leadership potential within their current school or sporting/interest group. These scholarships are available to students who have demonstrated excellence through leadership and are dedicated to being actively involved within the College community.
Scholarship applicants are required to provide a personal résumé (including supporting evidence of leadership duties), copies of their two most recent school reports and Year 5 NAPLAN results and a reference from a coach or teacher, outlining their leadership potential.
Applications will be means-tested and allocated at the discretion of the Principal.
All applicants for Rural and Remote Scholarship at John Paul College will be conditional on the following outcomes:
- students must be commencing/studying in Years 7 to 10;
- students must display a strong commitment to their academic performance and be willing to contribute to the holistic nature of the College;
- live in rural or remote areas of our country wishing to attend our Boarding Village; and
- possess qualities compatible with the values and ethos of the College.
Applicants must also provide a letter from their family outlining why they would like to be considered for the scholarship program.
John Paul College is committed to ensuring that education remains accessible and the College continues to fulfil its commitment to diversity, by offering a Needs-based Bursary to a student's family who would not have the financial resources to be able to send (or continue to send) their child to the College.
The College, in its absolute discretion, must form the view that the Applicant parents' and guardians' child would derive (or continue to derive) significant benefit from a John Paul College education and the applicant's parents and guardians must be able to prove through their Statement of Financial Position that, the need for a Needs-based Bursary.
For the sake of clarity, the College reserves the right to request the Applicant's parents and guardians to resubmit a Statement of Financial Position at any time during their child's enrolment at the College.
